Mariehamn, Åland Islands
The Åland Islands are an autonomous, Swedish-speaking region of Finland in the Baltic Sea. They consist of around 6,700 islands, with Fasta Åland being the largest. Åland has its own parliament, issues its own stamps, and is demilitarized.
The population is about 30,000. Mariehamn is the capital. The islands enjoy a high degree of self-governance, established in 1921 by the League of Nations to resolve a territorial dispute between Sweden and Finland peacefully.
